NAM AND KAWAI LEAD RD#1 OF THE ALOHA JUNIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

WAILUA, HAWAII – JUNE 6, 2017 — It was a beautiful day at Wailua Golf Course for the first round of the 2017 Aloha Junior PGA Championship qualifier. Mira Kubo currently leads the Girls’ 10 & under division after posting +8 (80). Jennifer Seo fired an impressive six-under (67) to lead a very competitive Girls’ 11-12 field. Four players in the Girls’ 11-12 division shot under par. Lana Calibuso-Kwee of Wailuku kept steady throughout the day and is currently holding a two-shot lead over Alison Takiyama and Kaylee Akagi in the Girls’ 13-15 age group. In the Girls’ 13-18 division, defending champion Malia Nam fired an impressive four-under par 69. Punahou’s Claire Choi is one stroke behind Nam going into tomorrow’s final round.
For the Boys’ 11-12 division, Joshua Chung of Honolulu posted a one-over (74), currently five strokes ahead of second place. Peter Jung is leading the Boys’ 13-15 division, after firing an impressive one-under (72). Evan Kawai leads the Boys’ 13-18 division with a (67) going into Wednesday’s final round. Remington Hirano and Trevor Arashiro of Honolulu are tied for second.
Overall champions from the boys’ and girls’ divisions (age 13-18) of the Aloha Junior PGA Championship will advance to the PGA of America’s flagship junior event, the 42nd Boys/Girls Junior PGA Championship hosted at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri. The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 18-21, 2017 and the Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 31-August 3, 2017. This year’s Championship will have twice the field size of previous years. This means that each of the 41 PGA of America Sections will receive two invitations. The top two (2) boys and two (2) girls will advance to the national championship and represent the Aloha Section PGA.
As a reminder, the Notice to Competitors and Tournament Policies of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association will remain in effect for the final round of the Aloha Junior PGA Championship. This includes the restriction of spectators on the course. The awards ceremony will begin once the last scorecard of the tournament is returned.
