WAIKOLOA, HAWAII – JUNE 5, 2018 — It was a beautiful day with gale force winds typical for Waikoloa Kings’ Golf Course for the first round of the 2018 Aloha Junior PGA Championship qualifier. Jaylen Wan shot a six-over-par (78) to lead the Girls 11-12 flight. Kyung Eun Lee of Honolulu shot an impressive two-over-par (74) and is currently holding a three-shot lead over Lacey Uchida and Allysha Mae Mateo in the Girls 13-18 division. Reese Guzman follows Mateo by two strokes, shooting +7 (79).
For the Boys 11-12 division, Justin Todd posted a +11 (83), currently six strokes ahead of Kade Kikuchi. Jordan Terada leads the Boys 13-18 division with a two-over-par (74) going into Wednesday’s final round. Davis Lee trails by two strokes.
Overall champions from the boys’ and girls’ divisions (age 13-18) of the Aloha Junior PGA Championship will advance to the PGA of America’s flagship junior event, the 43rd Boys/Girls Junior PGA Championship. The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 9-12, 2018 at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky and the Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 31-August 3, 2018 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Junior PGA Championship has traditionally been a stepping-stone for many of today’s PGA and LPGA Tour professionals, as well as current collegiate stars. Past Junior PGA Championship competitors who have gone on to successful professional careers on tour include: Inbee Park, Luke Guthrie, Trevor Immelman, Cristie Kerr, Justin Leonard, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Grace Park, Dottie Pepper, Jordan Spieth, Lexi Thompson, David Toms, Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods.
